Overview

Avon is a town in north-central Livingston County, bordered to the north by Monroe County (Town of Rush), to the east by Lima, to the south by Geneseo and to the west by Caledonia and York. The town includes a village that is also named Avon, as well as several hamlets. The community sits on the east bank of the Genesee River. Routes 5 & 20 pass through Avon and link small towns with interesting attractions and antique markets. The Avon Inn, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is well regarded for holiday dinners and weddings. The original Tom Wahl’s burger joint is in Avon.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, Avon has a Tops Friendly Markets store at 270 E. Main St. The closest Wegmans is 10 miles south in Geneseo. Avon has a nice selection of small retail shops, including a hardware store, a bakery, pizza shops, a pharmacy, mini markets, a Dollar General and a Dunkin Donuts. For major retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in Geneseo.



Recreation & Entertainment

Avon has a small-town feel, with plenty of community activities like picnics and festivals. Hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling are among the popular outdoor activities here. One of the only remaining drive-in theaters in the region is the Vintage Drive-In on Route 15 in East Avon, which has three screens. The enormous Avon Flea Market, which draws crowds from miles away in warm-weather months, is held on the drive-in grounds. The Avon Corn Fest is held each August.



Transportation & Traffic

Routes 5 & 20 are east-west highways that cross the town of Avon, and intersect Route 39 in the village. Routes 5 & 20 are delightful for “Sunday drives,” passing through several quaint small towns with attractions like antique shops. Route 15 is a north-south highway. The well-traveled Interstate 390 connects Avon to areas north and south.



Pros & Cons

Avon is a charming small town with large manufacturers, a good amount of retail, and several historic sites. In the summer, there’s a drive-in theater and a busy flea market. Avon is close to the college town of Geneseo and, via Interstate 390, a quick drive to bustling Henrietta and Rochester.
