Overview

Geneseo is the county seat of Livingston County and centrally located within the county. The town, which also includes a village named Geneseo, is bordered to the north by Avon; to the east by Conesus Lake, and, past the lake, Livonia; to the south by Groveland; and to the west by York and Leicester. The State University College at Geneseo is here, and the college adds a lively atmosphere to the town. A military aircraft museum is located on the grounds of the Geneseo Airport.

Essentials

Geneseo has several places to shop. For groceries, there’s a Wegmans store at 4287 Genesee Valley Plaza in town, and a Tops Friendly Markets store is in neighboring Avon (10 miles north). Geneseo has a thriving and growing retail center, anchored by a Walmart Supercenter but also including an appliance store, a hardware store, a Dollar Tree and a florist. The village’s Main Street has a variety of funky shops, including the inimitable Buzzo Music.

Recreation & Entertainment

Geneseo combines the lively atmosphere found in any college town with the rural charm of the region. Conesus Lake, on the eastern edge of town, is wonderful for boating, swimming, camping and other outdoor activities. The enormous Letchworth State Park is nearby and Stony Brook State Park is just a bit further away to the south. The college often has theatrical and music performances, lectures, and other events. Main Street has a number of college bars. For movies, the Geneseo Square Cinemas has first-run films.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 20A passes through the town. Route 63 and Route 39 are important north-south roadways, and Route 256 runs along the west shoreline of Conesus Lake. Interstate 390, heading north-south, is easily accessible.

Pros & Cons

Geneseo is still a small, quaint town with an historic downtown district, but major retailers like Walmart and Wegmans have been moving in. That pleases some residents and worries others. The college adds vibrancy to Geneseo that, again, is attractive to some people and sometimes annoying to others.
