Welcome to Groveland, NY

Overview

Groveland is a town in central Livingston County, bordered to the north by Geneseo, to the east by Conesus (and partly by Conesus Lake), to the south by Sparta and West Sparta and to the west by Mount Morris. The town is the home of the Groveland Correctional Facility, a state prison, and several hamlets but no village. Conesus Lake and outdoor life are major attractions here; Groveland has a small-town, rural atmosphere but still is close to shopping, entertainment and other amenities.

Essentials

Groveland has few shopping options, but there are plenty of others nearby. For grocery shopping, there’s a Wegmans supermarket in Geneseo, 12 miles north; Tops Friendly Markets has stores in Dansville (11 miles south) and in Avon (20 miles north). For retail, Geneseo has a Walmart Superstore and other smaller shops. The Geneseo Central School District, which has an elementary- and middle-high school, covers Groveland. The closest public library is in Geneseo. The closest hospital is Noyes Memorial in Dansville.

Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor entertainment is what you’ll find in the Groveland area – boating, swimming and fishing at Conesus Lake, and hiking, camping, picnicking and swimming at Letchworth or Stony Brook. Letchworth hosts a hugely popular arts and crafts festival in the fall, and other events throughout the summer.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 63 runs north-south through Groveland. Route 36 and Interstate 390, both heading north-south, are just west of Groveland. There are no major east-west highways.

Pros & Cons

Groveland’s central location makes it easy to get anywhere in the county quickly, including Geneseo, the county seat. Proximity to Conesus Lake, Letchworth State Park and Stony Brook State Park are plusses. Its wide-open, rural character makes it perfect for people looking for a quiet, small-town atmosphere. Some people might be concerned about living near a state prison.
