OverviewGeneseo is the county seat of Livingston County and centrally located within the county. The town, which also includes a village named Geneseo, is bordered to the north by Avon; to the east by Conesus Lake, and, past the lake, Livonia; to the south by Groveland; and to the west by York and Leicester. The State University College at Geneseo is here, and the college adds a lively atmosphere to the town. A military aircraft museum is located on the grounds of the Geneseo Airport. The majority of the town is farmland, but the village has a small-town feel. Major retailers have been moving onto parts of Route 20A, which pleases some residents because of the convenience but bothers others who worry about the town becoming suburbanized. Conesus Lake, one of the smallest of the Finger Lakes, is a treat. Geneseo is the cultural, governmental, commercial and recreational center of Livingston County.
Local Museums & Landmarks A big part of the village is known as the Geneseo Historic District (also known as the Main Street Historic District) and includes Main Street’s Bear Fountain, the best-known symbol of Geneseo. The Wadsworth Fort Site, an archaeological site, is on the National Register of Historic Places. So, too, is Sweet Briar, a historic Country Place estate. The 1941 Historical Aircraft Museum displays vintage military aircraft from World War II and the Korean War and hosts the annual Geneseo Airshow. The Livingston County Historical Society is based in Geneseo. |
