Essentials

Sparta has little in the way of shopping, but there are plenty of nearby options. For groceries, there’s a Tops Friendly Markets store in Dansville, just 7 miles south, where you’ll also find a smaller Save-a-Lot store. The closest Wegmans supermarket is 18 miles north, in the college town of Geneseo. For major retailers, Geneseo also has a Walmart Supercenter.

Recreation & Entertainment

Sparta’s attractions are of the “natural” variety – wide-open spaces for camping and other outdoor activities. There are plenty of other attractions nearby. Stony Brook State Park in Dansville has picnic areas and shelters, a “natural” swimming area, and hiking trails in a gorge that leads to a series of waterfalls. The Star Theatre, a movie-theater complex, is in Dansville. The popular New York State Festival of Balloons is held at the Dansville Municipal Airport, typically over Labor Day.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 63, which heads north-south, is on the western edge of Sparta. And just west of Route 63 is Interstate 390, a major highway.

Pros & Cons

You’ll like Sparta if you’re looking for a quiet, small town with plenty of open space. Shopping and other attractions are close by, many in the neighboring village of Dansville. Nearby Stony Brook State Park is a gem.
