Overview

West Sparta is a town in south-central Livingston County, bordered to the north by Groveland, to the east by Sparta and Dansville, to the south by Ossian, and to the west by Mount Morris and Nunda. West Sparta is one of the least-densely populated towns in the county, with only about 1,250 residents. The town has no village but includes the hamlets of Byersville, Union Corners and Woodville.


Essentials

Most residents’ shopping needs are met in nearby Dansville, just 7 miles southwest. Dansville has grocery stores like Tops Friendly Markets and the smaller Save-a-Lot, pharmacies like Rite Aid and CVS, and a Family Dollar store. For a wider variety of retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in Geneseo, 14 miles north.



Recreation & Entertainment

This is small-town living, where regular entertainment includes events like the fire department’s barbecue dinner and church yard sales. There’s plenty of room for outdoor activities of all sorts here. Hope Valley Camp has a pond, two creeks, a paintball field and rifle range, and activities like kayaking, hiking and fishing and archery. The town of West Sparta hosts the annual Old Fashioned Day, which includes a Civil War camp, music, arts and crafts, and more.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 36 heads north-south through West Sparta. The busy and well-traveled Interstate 390, also running north-south, is just west of Route 36 and also goes through the heart of town.



Pros & Cons

Small-town living and plenty of quiet, wide-open spaces are the draws here. The neighboring village of Dansville has shopping, entertainment and other attractions and is just minutes of West Sparta. Proximity to Letchworth and Stony Brook state parks is a plus. Nearby Mount Morris has a developing downtown area and more attractions.
