Overview York is a town in the northwest corner of Livingston County, bordered to the north by Caledonia; to the east by Avon and Geneseo; to the south by Leicester; and to the west by Genesee County (town of Pavilion) and Wyoming County (town of Warsaw). York has no village, as several Livingston County towns do, but several hamlets, including Retsof, the site of one of the world’s largest salt mines until its collapse in the 1990s. Another hamlet here, Piffard, is the home of the Abbey of the Genesee, a monastery. Monk’s Bread is produced at the monastery. York has small-town charm, rural character and abundant farm land – about 90 percent of the land is agricultural. Still, you’re close to shopping and other amenities in neighboring Avon, Geneseo and Warsaw. Local Museums & Landmarks Linwood, a 350-acre farm with several buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Linwood Gardens, a private residence, holds an annual Tree Peony Festival of Flowers in the spring. President Chester Arthur grew up in Livingston County and attended a Brick School on Route 36 in York. The town has a historical society.

Essentials For shopping, York has a Dollar General, a deli, a hardware store and other small shops and a handful of restaurants. For more retail shopping, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in Geneseo, 10 miles southeast and a Walmart in Warsaw, about 15 miles west. For grocery shopping, Tops Friendly Markets has stores in Avon (11 miles northeast) and in Warsaw. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Geneseo. York does not have its own public library, but several are nearby – in Avon, Pavilion (7 miles west) and Geneseo. The York Central School District, with an elementary school and a junior-senior high school, covers this area. The closest hospital is Wyoming County Community in neighboring Warsaw.

Nearby in Warsaw is The Stage, a not-for-profit center for live performances and movies on Main Street that features new-release movies, dance, theater and music. Geneseo has a movie-theater complex and all of the amenities you would expect of a college town. The Genesee Country Museum & Village, a popular attraction in Mumford, is only 10 miles north. The museum/village has dozens of old buildings that were brought there to show how life was more than a century ago. The place also has a sporting-art museum and a ball field where old-time baseball is played in the summer.

Transportation & Traffic Route 36, heading north-south, intersects with Route 63 (east-west) in the hamlet of Greigsville. Route 20 passes along the north town line.

Pros & Cons York has small-town atmosphere with plenty of farmland and wide-open space. You’re still close enough to nearby attractions and shopping in Warsaw, Geneseo and York. The monastery is a bit of a tourist attraction and a good place for contemplative thought. The salt mine was a major employer before it collapsed.
